As the weather gets warmer, everyone seems eager to go outside and enjoy the weather. Here are a few of our favorite spring activities worth trying near Plymouth, IN.

Mayfest

Held in May, Shipsewana’s annual celebration of Midwestern small-town life brings you fun and games for the whole family. Live entertainment, softball tournaments, home-cooked breakfasts, and plenty of kids’ activities mean you can find something for everyone to enjoy.

The Grand Mayfest parade kicks off Saturday celebrations, which have included events like a classic car cruise, garden tractor pull, garden show, and corn-hole tournament; events vary by year, so if you’re curious, you’ll need to check the event page for the town of Shipsewana.

Take a Bird Hike In Tippecanoe River State Park

As the migratory birds head back to Indiana for the summer, it’s a great time to get out and find who’s in the neighborhood. Take a hike through Tippecanoe River State Park at 4200 North US Highway 35 in Winamac, IN with an expert birder as a guide to help you identify the birds you’ll see and hear along the way.

If you’re not a hiker, you can also enjoy the warming weather and watch the newly-hatched ducklings from the river on a canoe or kayak. There are several local spots to rent the equipment you’ll need if you don’t have your own.

Hunt for Mushrooms in Winamac Fish and Wildlife Area

Mushrooms start to emerge in the spring, especially the coveted morels. You can forage for mushrooms, nuts, and berries throughout Winamac Fish and Wildlife Area at 1493 West 500 North in Winamac, IN, although you are not allowed to remove rocks, plants, or animals from the preserve.

You can find morels in April and May, depending on the weather. You’ll need a week of daytime temperatures in the 60s and nighttime temperatures in the upper 40s, and then you have to find just the right spot soon after a good rain shower. Once you find those precious morels, you can go back to the same spot year after year, as long as other mushroom hunters don’t get there first!

Indiana Dunes Birding Festival

Hosted by the Indiana Audubon Society, the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival brings together birders for miles around to celebrate the abundance and diversity of birds found in Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park.

The schedule is packed with speakers, workshops, and guided field trips to educate and offer a showcase for the vibrant local bird communities. The Festival is held annually in early May to coincide with spring migrations.

With so many places to go to celebrate the end of winter, you’ll want to make sure your car is up to some spring driving. Come down to Oliver Ford in Plymouth, IN today to take a look at our excellent selection of new or used cars.
