Looking Back on the History of the Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is one of the most well-known names in the automotive industry. Its origins began over 50 years ago in 1964, when the first-ever production model of the Mustang nameplate debuted at the New York World’s Fair. Since then, the history of the Ford Mustang has been long and filled with success, earning the model recognition as an iconic American muscle car.

First Mustang Launch

The original Ford Mustang’s launch was Ford’s most successful vehicle launch in history. It set the stage for the sports car segment and was followed by many rivals, but never matched. The next few decades, the original Mustang saw some drastic changes as environmental laws and regulations, as well as changing market trends, forced it to adapt. Over time, the lightweight two-door coupe’s lineup grew to include other models, upgrades, and more powerful and fuel-efficient engines. Then, in the 1990s and 2000s, the Ford Mustang adopted a more fastback, futuristic look with heavy revisions to its design and model lineup.

The Mustang's Legacy

The history of the Ford Mustang continues into the present-day generation, which rolled out on dealership lots a few years ago in 2015 and continues into current times. Three different engine options and various performance upgrades, from its rigid suspension to 5-star safety rating, make the current generation model of the Ford Mustang a culmination of everything that has come before it.
